Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.40%, while the S&P 500 index gained 2.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 3.03%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which rose 3.90% or 6.27 points to trade at 166.95 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 3.54% or 5.86 points to end at 171.18 and Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) was up 3.20% or 8.29 points to 267.04 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 1.55% or 1.14 points to trade at 72.28 in late trade. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 0.55% or 0.28 points to end at 50.79 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) shed 0.36% or 0.63 points to 176.57.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Fortinet Inc (NASDAQ:FTNT) which rose 8.63% to 317.24, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was up 7.96% to settle at 324.27 and AutoZone Inc (NYSE:AZO) which gained 7.71% to close at 2024.86.
The worst performers were Comcast Corp (NASDAQ:CMCSA) which was down 5.29% to 49.58 in late trade, Charter Communications Inc (NASDAQ:CHTR) which lost 3.32% to settle at 650.60 and Western Union Co (NYSE:WU) which was down 2.80% to 17.35 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ensysce Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:ENSC) which rose 136.30% to 3.19, Siyata Mobile Inc (NASDAQ:SYTA) which was up 66.67% to settle at 4.600 and Trupanion Inc (NASDAQ:TRUP) which gained 39.03% to close at 155.41.
The worst performers were Insignia Systems Inc (NASDAQ:ISIG) which was down 31.03% to 10.380 in late trade, AeroVironment Inc (NASDAQ:AVAV) which lost 27.48% to settle at 57.98 and Healthequity Inc (NASDAQ:HQY) which was down 24.60% to 42.73 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2623 to 665 and 102 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2936 rose and 900 declined, while 167 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 19.46% to 21.89.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.30% or 5.35 to $1784.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 3.34% or 2.32 to hit $71.81 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $75.17 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1268, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 113.58.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.04% at 96.295.
