Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Utilities, Oil & Gas and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.13%, while the S&P 500 index added 1.29%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 5.02% or 6.11 points to trade at 127.89 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 2.73% or 4.62 points to end at 173.92 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) was up 2.45% or 3.29 points to 137.28 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM), which lost 0.49% or 1.08 points to trade at 220.19 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 0.34% or 0.14 points to end at 41.34 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 0.07% or 0.06 points to 89.38.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which rose 6.01% to 114.00, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which was up 5.98% to settle at 167.36 and Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL) which gained 5.85% to close at 20.07.
The worst performers were Apartment Investment and Management Co (NYSE:AIV) which was down 87.51% to 5.04 in late trade, Tyson Foods Inc (NYSE:TSN) which lost 2.15% to settle at 68.28 and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:REGN) which was down 1.73% to 491.71 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Anchiano Therapeutics Ltd (NASDAQ:ANCN) which rose 85.71% to 2.860, Prevail Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PRVL) which was up 82.32% to settle at 22.79 and Biocardia Inc (NASDAQ:BCDA) which gained 40.19% to close at 6.28.
The worst performers were China Liberal Education Holdings (NASDAQ:CLEU) which was down 30.17% to 4.16 in late trade, Precigen Inc (NASDAQ:PGEN) which lost 22.32% to settle at 7.17 and Loop Industries Inc (NASDAQ:LOOP) which was down 22.32% to 7.24 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2338 to 733 and 94 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2127 rose and 896 declined, while 58 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.40% to 22.89.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.39% or 25.50 to $1857.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 1.19% or 0.56 to hit $47.55 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.82% or 0.41 to trade at $50.70 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.14% to 1.2160, while USD/JPY fell 0.40% to 103.61.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.31% at 90.373.
