Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Consumer Services and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.06%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.84%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 1.28%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which rose 7.82% or 17.48 points to trade at 241.01 at the close. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 3.26% or 6.13 points to end at 194.00 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was up 2.01% or 9.71 points to 493.41 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 1.52% or 2.11 points to trade at 136.44 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 1.11% or 1.61 points to end at 143.53 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 0.86% or 0.67 points to 76.91.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) which rose 7.82% to 241.01, Zimmer Biomet Holdings Inc (NYSE:ZBH) which was up 7.35% to settle at 119.88 and ABIOMED Inc (NASDAQ:ABMD) which gained 6.62% to close at 309.03.
The worst performers were Fiserv Inc (NASDAQ:FISV) which was down 6.00% to 99.54 in late trade, Simon Property Group Inc (NYSE:SPG) which lost 4.62% to settle at 142.04 and Willis Towers Watson PLC (NASDAQ:WTW) which was down 4.56% to 225.14 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Society Pass Inc (NASDAQ:SOPA) which rose 42.68% to 4.68, Tritium Dcfc Ltd (NASDAQ:DCFC) which was up 39.47% to settle at 9.54 and Ucloudlink Group Inc (NASDAQ:UCL) which gained 38.57% to close at 2.03.
The worst performers were Pulse Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:PLSE) which was down 34.44% to 7.12 in late trade, Anghami De Inc (NASDAQ:ANGH) which lost 30.92% to settle at 13.470 and Nuvectis Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:NVCT) which was down 20.50% to 6.32 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2034 to 1192 and 134 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2454 rose and 1369 declined, while 204 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 6.21% to 21.44.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.27% or 5.00 to $1826.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 1.69% or 1.54 to hit $89.78 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.08% or 0.07 to trade at $91.30 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1418, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 115.56.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.21% at 95.597.
