Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Financials, Technology and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.70% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.01%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which rose 8.86% or 12.99 points to trade at 159.53 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 2.52% or 5.94 points to end at 242.03 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 1.16% or 0.46 points to 40.25 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), which lost 1.72% or 2.07 points to trade at 118.15 in late trade. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) declined 1.02% or 0.37 points to end at 35.83 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 0.44% or 0.71 points to 159.76.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) which rose 8.86% to 159.53, Assurant Inc (NYSE:AIZ) which was up 6.20% to settle at 101.80 and Nielsen Holdings (NYSE:NLSN) which gained 4.22% to close at 41.69.
The worst performers were Allergan Plc (NYSE:AGN) which was down 5.37% to 187.15 in late trade, Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which lost 4.45% to settle at 10.31 and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which was down 3.36% to 318.24 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ocean Power Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:OPTT) which rose 38.89% to 2.000, Spectrum Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SPPI) which was up 36.03% to settle at 19.67 and China Internet Nationwide Financial Services Inc (NASDAQ:CIFS) which gained 28.67% to close at 28.90.
The worst performers were Akari Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:AKTX) which was down 29.69% to 4.500 in late trade, Social Reality Inc (NASDAQ:SRAX) which lost 25.49% to settle at 3.6510 and Neothetics Inc (NASDAQ:NEOT) which was down 22.67% to 1.33 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1584 to 1508 and 134 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1405 rose and 1101 declined, while 141 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.94% to 10.11.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.24% or 3.05 to $1283.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.27% or 0.14 to hit $52.02 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.54% or 0.31 to trade at $58.19 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.23% to 1.1793, while USD/JPY rose 0.65% to 112.93.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 93.27.
