Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.70%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.57%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which rose 2.46% or 4.47 points to trade at 186.01 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 2.44% or 6.69 points to end at 280.72 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 1.97% or 3.56 points to 184.10 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 3.14% or 1.63 points to trade at 50.28 in late trade. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) declined 2.15% or 3.46 points to end at 157.49 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 0.88% or 1.13 points to 127.94.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which rose 7.18% to 150.41, Match Group Inc (NASDAQ:MTCH) which was up 6.70% to settle at 82.48 and Fortinet Inc (NASDAQ:FTNT) which gained 6.31% to close at 323.49.
The worst performers were Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:CRL) which was down 7.21% to 253.34 in late trade, Schlumberger NV (NYSE:SLB) which lost 7.11% to settle at 38.69 and Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL) which was down 6.26% to 35.33 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Nkarta Inc (NASDAQ:NKTX) which rose 140.93% to 18.72, Rubius Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RUBY) which was up 40.60% to settle at 1.87 and Erytech Pharma SA ADR (NASDAQ:ERYP) which gained 37.70% to close at 1.68.
The worst performers were Clarus Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:CRXT) which was down 56.17% to 0.79 in late trade, Eliem Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ELYM) which lost 55.76% to settle at 2.88 and Toughbuilt Industries Inc (NASDAQ:TBLT) which was down 44.87% to 14.57 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1722 to 1520 and 117 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2178 rose and 1715 declined, while 237 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.22% to 27.02.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.84% or 35.55 to $1,898.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 3.09% or 3.15 to hit $98.92 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 3.38% or 3.59 to trade at $102.56 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.76% to 1.07, while USD/JPY fell 0.38% to 128.07.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.53% at 101.75.
