Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.12%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.22%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.39%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which rose 7.76% or 0.99 points to trade at 13.74 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 1.26% or 1.55 points to end at 124.16 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 1.24% or 2.26 points to 184.43 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 2.05% or 1.04 points to trade at 49.67 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 0.89% or 1.10 points to end at 122.62 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 0.76% or 1.04 points to 135.54.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) which rose 7.76% to 13.74, Concho Resources Inc (NYSE:CXO) which was up 5.06% to settle at 131.69 and Lennar Corporation (NYSE:LEN) which gained 4.86% to close at 51.61.
The worst performers were Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) which was down 6.97% to 66.73 in late trade, Fortive Corp (NYSE:FTV) which lost 3.13% to settle at 75.20 and Akamai Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:AKAM) which was down 2.49% to 75.72 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were China Lending Corp (NASDAQ:CLDC) which rose 145.55% to 4.69, Ascent Capital Group Inc (NASDAQ:ASCMA) which was up 44.23% to settle at 3.75 and Sophiris Bio Inc (NASDAQ:SPHS) which gained 34.82% to close at 3.020.
The worst performers were Gevo Inc (NASDAQ:GEVO) which was down 23.35% to 7.6500 in late trade, Achaogen Inc (NASDAQ:AKAO) which lost 20.22% to settle at 9.590 and Sellas Life Sciences Group Inc (NASDAQ:SLS) which was down 18.22% to 3.7700 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1864 to 1209 and 116 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1489 rose and 1058 declined, while 116 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.73% to 15.99.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.68% or 8.60 to $1260.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 3.64% or 2.48 to hit $70.56 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 2.31% or 1.72 to trade at $76.27 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.47% to 1.1649, while USD/JPY rose 0.26% to 110.06.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.45% at 94.37.
