Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.09% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.19%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.67%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 4.06% or 2.38 points to trade at 61.05 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 3.72% or 4.91 points to end at 136.94 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) was up 2.81% or 4.08 points to 149.10 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 3.25% or 3.10 points to trade at 92.28 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 2.00% or 4.24 points to end at 207.22 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) shed 1.83% or 0.88 points to 47.21.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were PACCAR Inc (NASDAQ:PCAR) which rose 10.94% to 99.17, BorgWarner Inc (NYSE:BWA) which was up 7.02% to settle at 43.75 and Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) which gained 6.26% to close at 11.54.
The worst performers were EOG Resources Inc (NYSE:EOG) which was down 8.06% to 55.35 in late trade, Devon Energy Corporation (NYSE:DVN) which lost 8.09% to settle at 18.36 and Cimarex Energy Co (NYSE:XEC) which was down 8.03% to 44.78 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Vinco Ventures Inc (NASDAQ:BBIG) which rose 222.73% to 4.970, Qutoutiao Inc (NASDAQ:QTT) which was up 72.86% to settle at 4.65 and Aditx Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ADTX) which gained 54.02% to close at 4.02.
The worst performers were Obalon Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OBLN) which was down 34.18% to 5.450 in late trade, Cancer Genetics Inc (NASDAQ:CGIX) which lost 24.74% to settle at 4.41 and Dyne Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:DYN) which was down 23.66% to 21.78 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1798 to 1280 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1671 fell and 1399 advanced, while 57 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.67% to 21.22 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.07% or 1.30 to $1867.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.39% or 0.21 to hit $53.10 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.04% or 0.02 to trade at $56.06 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.48% to 1.2163, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 103.53.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.41% at 90.095.
