Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.07%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.28%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.71%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 2.29% or 4.63 points to trade at 207.22 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 2.15% or 1.08 points to end at 51.35 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 1.32% or 1.81 points to 138.43 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 1.93% or 1.09 points to trade at 55.50 in late trade. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 1.28% or 1.67 points to end at 128.64 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) shed 1.24% or 0.64 points to 50.88.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL) which rose 9.15% to 23.74, Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT) which was up 6.11% to settle at 50.73 and Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which gained 5.43% to close at 55.31.
The worst performers were Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which was down 4.35% to 17.82 in late trade, Kroger Company (NYSE:KR) which lost 3.83% to settle at 20.86 and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) which was down 3.64% to 14.30 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Peak Resorts Inc (NASDAQ:SKIS) which rose 112.75% to 10.850, Taronis Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:TRNX) which was up 73.25% to settle at 0.545 and Durect Corporation (NASDAQ:DRRX) which gained 33.64% to close at 0.971.
The worst performers were Intec Pharma Ltd (NASDAQ:NTEC) which was down 81.61% to 0.550 in late trade, Xenetic Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:XBIO) which lost 30.72% to settle at 3.360 and Advaxis Inc (NASDAQ:ADXS) which was down 27.56% to 0.9200 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1558 to 1389 and 138 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1439 fell and 1217 advanced, while 98 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 6.37% to 13.53.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.09% or 1.25 to $1425.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 1.06% or 0.59 to hit $56.22 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $63.35 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.01% to 1.1209, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 107.86.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.16% at 96.970.
