Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Industrials and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.31%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.32%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.46%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE), which rose 2.26% or 0.68 points to trade at 30.72 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 1.30% or 0.70 points to end at 54.40 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 0.99% or 1.09 points to 111.08 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 2.63% or 1.62 points to trade at 59.97 in late trade. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) declined 2.19% or 0.70 points to end at 31.23 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 1.39% or 1.07 points to 75.72.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Edwards Lifesciences Corporation (NYSE:EW) which rose 16.86% to 105.08, Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which was up 8.96% to settle at 8.51 and Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:VRTX) which gained 4.70% to close at 82.87.
The worst performers were PulteGroup Inc (NYSE:PHM) which was down 6.64% to 17.21 in late trade, BorgWarner Inc (NYSE:BWA) which lost 6.37% to settle at 35.28 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was down 4.75% to 9.42 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Pacific Sunwear of California Inc (NASDAQ:PSUN) which rose 58.91% to 0.3496, Stereotaxis Inc (NASDAQ:STXS) which was up 48.65% to settle at 1.6500 and Virgin America Inc (NASDAQ:VA) which gained 41.67% to close at 55.11.
The worst performers were Vericel Corp Ord (NASDAQ:VCEL) which was down 38.31% to 3.720 in late trade, Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which lost 31.49% to settle at 4.4600 and Real Goods Solar Inc (NASDAQ:RGSE) which was down 27.32% to 0.5160 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2390 to 955 and 33 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1510 fell and 1074 advanced, while 60 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.48% to 14.08.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 0.49% or 6.00 to $1217.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 3.32% or 1.22 to hit $35.57 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 2.79% or 1.08 to trade at $37.59 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.05% to 1.1395, while USD/JPY fell 0.35% to 111.32.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.02% at 94.56.
