Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Telecoms and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.30%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.38%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.50%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which rose 3.51% or 2.95 points to trade at 87.05 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 1.98% or 1.20 points to end at 61.95 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) was up 1.86% or 1.85 points to 101.37 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which lost 3.47% or 4.44 points to trade at 123.34 in late trade. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 2.94% or 5.04 points to end at 166.23 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 1.76% or 1.51 points to 84.48.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE:LMT) which rose 7.47% to 249.50, KeyCorp (NYSE:KEY) which was up 5.99% to settle at 13.88 and Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which gained 4.89% to close at 58.91.
The worst performers were Nielsen Holdings (NYSE:NLSN) which was down 16.60% to 45.81 in late trade, Under Armour Inc C (NYSE:UAc) which lost 13.80% to settle at 28.360 and Under Armour Inc (NYSE:UA) which was down 13.23% to 32.88 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ocean Rig UDW Inc (NASDAQ:ORIG) which rose 20.85% to 1.15, Oasmia Pharmaceutical AB (NASDAQ:OASM) which was up 19.66% to settle at 3.470 and Towerstream Corp (NASDAQ:TWER) which gained 18.64% to close at 1.4000.
The worst performers were Dipexium Ph (NASDAQ:DPRX) which was down 78.04% to 2.80 in late trade, FuelCell Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FCEL) which lost 27.88% to settle at 3.750 and Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:HMNY) which was down 27.45% to 7.110 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1929 to 1208 and 100 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1767 fell and 693 advanced, while 167 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.99% to 13.54.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.85% or 10.75 to $1274.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.27% or 0.64 to hit $49.88 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 1.50% or 0.77 to trade at $50.69 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.06% to 1.0886, while USD/JPY rose 0.05% to 104.23.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.07% at 98.71.
