Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Healthcare, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.16% to hit a new 3-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.44%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.92%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 1.59% or 1.46 points to trade at 93.37 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 0.70% or 1.16 points to end at 166.89 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 0.29% or 0.44 points to 152.39 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE), which lost 2.48% or 0.76 points to trade at 29.87 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 1.19% or 0.41 points to end at 33.93 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 1.07% or 1.19 points to 109.83.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) which rose 10.72% to 14.15, FMC Corporation (NYSE:FMC) which was up 10.50% to settle at 50.93 and Twenty-First Century Fox A Inc (NASDAQ:FOXA) which gained 7.28% to close at 27.71.
The worst performers were Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which was down 19.48% to 14.63 in late trade, First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) which lost 14.96% to settle at 34.51 and Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which was down 9.31% to 87.53 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Inteliquent Inc (NASDAQ:IQNT) which rose 34.89% to 22.58, Technical Communications (NASDAQ:TCCO) which was up 28.26% to settle at 2.950 and DryShips Inc (NASDAQ:DRYS) which gained 19.90% to close at 4.7000.
The worst performers were Trillium Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:TRIL) which was down 53.08% to 6.85 in late trade, Sequential (NASDAQ:SQBG) which lost 33.61% to settle at 4.80 and Ptc Therape (NASDAQ:PTCT) which was down 32.96% to 4.19 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1841 to 1312 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1622 fell and 849 advanced, while 159 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 13.92% to 22.01 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.29% or 3.75 to $1304.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.59% or 0.72 to hit $44.62 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 1.17% or 0.55 to trade at $46.31 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.09% to 1.1108, while USD/JPY fell 0.41% to 102.89.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.24% at 97.16.
