Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.44% to hit a new 52-week high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.34%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.64%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Company (NYSE:BA), which rose 1.55% or 2.01 points to trade at 132.04 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 1.20% or 1.81 points to end at 152.19 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 1.12% or 0.38 points to 34.38 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 0.67% or 0.95 points to trade at 140.32 in late trade. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 0.02% or 0.02 points to end at 85.75 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 0.02% or 0.01 points to 59.34.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which rose 4.85% to 94.10, Alliance Data Systems Corporation (NYSE:ADS) which was up 4.72% to settle at 210.39 and Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which gained 4.24% to close at 87.78.
The worst performers were CH Robinson Worldwide Inc (NASDAQ:CHRW) which was down 3.45% to 71.86 in late trade, Murphy Oil Corporation (NYSE:MUR) which lost 3.00% to settle at 29.74 and Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which was down 2.97% to 11.78 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Biolife Sol (NASDAQ:BLFS) which rose 50.55% to 2.370, Escalon Medical Corp (NASDAQ:ESMC) which was up 45.33% to settle at 1.0317 and DT Asia Investments Ltd (NASDAQ:CADT) which gained 45.09% to close at 7.24.
The worst performers were Digital Ally Inc (NASDAQ:DGLY) which was down 18.09% to 5.480 in late trade, Echo Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ECTE) which lost 17.32% to settle at 1.480 and SemiLEDS Corporation (NASDAQ:LEDS) which was down 13.18% to 6.0600 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2241 to 1063 and 20 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1703 rose and 878 declined, while 62 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.80% to 13.57.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.16% or 2.15 to $1356.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 1.96% or 0.89 to hit $44.52 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.45% or 0.68 to trade at $46.08 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.06% to 1.1057, while USD/JPY rose 2.22% to 102.82.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.30% at 96.60.
