Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 6.90%, while the S&P 500 index lost 5.89%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 5.27%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which fell 0.88% or 1.07 points to trade at 120.09 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) fell 2.49% or 2.97 points to end at 116.26 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was down 2.76% or 1.60 points to 56.45 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 16.43% or 33.41 points to trade at 170.00 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 9.91% or 4.32 points to end at 39.26 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 9.13% or 11.86 points to 118.01.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Kroger Company (NYSE:KR) which rose 0.40% to 32.70, Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation (NYSE:COG) which was down 0.49% to settle at 20.14 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) which lost 0.88% to close at 120.09.
The worst performers were Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which was down 16.46% to 17.25 in late trade, Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) which lost 16.43% to settle at 170.00 and Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which was down 16.14% to 17.41 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Wah Fu Education Group Ltd (NASDAQ:WAFU) which rose 222.07% to 7.150, Wins Finance Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:WINS) which was up 146.18% to settle at 50.00 and Celldex Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CLDX) which gained 82.40% to close at 8.755.
The worst performers were Jiayin Group Inc (NASDAQ:JFIN) which was down 32.76% to 3.90 in late trade, Liberty Tripadvisor Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:LTRPB) which lost 30.29% to settle at 43.92 and Immuron Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:IMRN) which was down 30.16% to 6.90 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2851 to 83 and 10 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2587 fell and 152 advanced, while 11 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 47.95% to 40.79 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.76% or 13.00 to $1733.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 8.69% or 3.44 to hit $36.16 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.08% or 0.03 to trade at $38.28 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1302, while USD/JPY fell 0.00% to 106.84.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.84% at 96.760.
