Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Healthcare, Financials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 4.60% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index lost 4.10%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 3.78%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which fell 2.50% or 4.01 points to trade at 156.49 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) fell 3.26% or 5.53 points to end at 163.85 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was down 3.53% or 1.63 points to 44.52 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 5.74% or 20.03 points to trade at 328.88 in late trade. Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) declined 5.69% or 4.81 points to end at 79.72 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) shed 5.48% or 7.37 points to 127.24.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which rose 3.70% to 35.62, Church & Dwight Company Inc (NYSE:CHD) which was up 2.35% to settle at 47.42 and Estee Lauder Companies Inc (NYSE:EL) which lost 0.07% to close at 134.30.
The worst performers were Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) which was down 9.22% to 58.16 in late trade, Arconic Inc (NYSE:ARNC) which lost 8.91% to settle at 26.52 and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was down 8.49% to 213.70 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Affimed NV (NASDAQ:AFMD) which rose 41.33% to 2.650, Top Ships Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) which was up 22.62% to settle at 0.2510 and Alcobra Ltd (NASDAQ:ARCT) which gained 15.18% to close at 6.83.
The worst performers were EyeGate Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:EYEG) which was down 41.26% to 0.602 in late trade, Corcept Therapeutics Incorporated (NASDAQ:CORT) which lost 26.43% to settle at 17.260 and Cenveo Inc (NASDAQ:CVO) which was down 23.42% to 0.360 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2868 to 321 and 50 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2296 fell and 298 advanced, while 70 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 124.15% to 38.80 a new 52-week high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.29% or 3.90 to $1341.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 2.73% or 1.79 to hit $63.66 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 1.94% or 1.33 to trade at $67.25 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.52% to 1.2391, while USD/JPY fell 0.91% to 109.16.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.42% at 89.41.
