Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 3.05% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index fell 2.93%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 3.02%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which fell 0.92% or 0.49 points to trade at 53.01 at the close. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) fell 1.11% or 1.19 points to end at 106.22 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was down 1.17% or 0.66 points to 55.71 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which lost 5.91% or 2.77 points to trade at 44.08 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 5.01% or 2.66 points to end at 50.41 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 4.20% or 8.58 points to 195.53.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which rose 0.85% to 37.98, Ventas Inc (NYSE:VTR) which was up 0.24% to settle at 71.46 and Evergy Inc (NYSE:EVRG) which gained 0.08% to close at 63.790.
The worst performers were Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which was down 13.22% to 16.80 in late trade, Kohls Corp (NYSE:KSS) which lost 10.97% to settle at 45.11 and Nordstrom Inc (NYSE:JWN) which was down 10.65% to 26.02 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Akari Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:AKTX) which rose 62.22% to 2.920, Infrastructure and Energy Alternatives Inc (NASDAQ:IEA) which was up 53.97% to settle at 3.68 and Novavax Inc (NASDAQ:NVAX) which gained 40.47% to close at 6.040.
The worst performers were MMTEC Inc (NASDAQ:MTC) which was down 45.50% to 4.00 in late trade, Myriad Genetics Inc (NASDAQ:MYGN) which lost 42.76% to settle at 25.50 and DelMar Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:DMPI) which was down 40.47% to 0.935 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2573 to 461 and 11 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2276 fell and 391 advanced, while 77 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 25.64% to 22.10.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.86% or 13.00 to $1527.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 3.82% or 2.18 to hit $54.92 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.17% or 0.10 to trade at $58.96 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1140, while USD/JPY fell 0.10% to 105.78.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.20% at 97.830.
