Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 3.04% to hit a new 3-year low, while the S&P 500 index declined 2.93%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.27%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 11.17% or 10.61 points to trade at 105.62 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 8.18% or 3.75 points to end at 49.58 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 6.73% or 10.24 points to 162.39 in late trade.
Biggest losers included United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), which lost 9.18% or 7.58 points to trade at 74.95 in late trade. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) declined 8.71% or 5.17 points to end at 54.22 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 7.67% or 11.39 points to 137.10.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which rose 18.40% to 28.19, Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which was up 14.96% to settle at 5.15 and FLIR Systems Inc (NASDAQ:FLIR) which gained 13.52% to close at 28.97.
The worst performers were Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which was down 20.10% to 4.81 in late trade, Kohls Corp (NYSE:KSS) which lost 17.41% to settle at 13.09 and HollyFrontier Corporation (NYSE:HFC) which was down 16.25% to 18.66 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Alterity Therapeutics Ltd (NASDAQ:ATHE) which rose 100.00% to 0.7200, Jiayin Group Inc (NASDAQ:JFIN) which was up 72.16% to settle at 3.03 and Daseke Inc (NASDAQ:DSKE) which gained 67.95% to close at 1.44.
The worst performers were Frontier Communications Corp (NASDAQ:FTR) which was down 56.67% to 0.3900 in late trade, Town Sports International Holdings (NASDAQ:CLUB) which lost 45.00% to settle at 0.660 and Bellerophon Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BLPH) which was down 32.67% to 12.1200 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2239 to 690 and 19 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1613 fell and 1095 advanced, while 39 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 6.74% to 61.59.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 5.11% or 75.80 to $1560.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 5.17% or 1.17 to hit $23.80 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.18% or 0.05 to trade at $27.54 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.07% to 1.0729, while USD/JPY fell 0.05% to 111.14.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.31% at 103.183.
