Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 2.32%, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.97%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 2.78%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 0.44% or 0.26 points to trade at 58.72 at the close. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) added 0.38% or 0.19 points to end at 49.87 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) was up 0.31% or 0.29 points to 92.70 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which lost 7.46% or 16.60 points to trade at 206.05 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 5.04% or 10.30 points to end at 194.17 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) shed 3.53% or 6.56 points to 179.43.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which rose 3.97% to 39.80, ConAgra Foods Inc (NYSE:CAG) which was up 2.50% to settle at 35.25 and Perrigo Co (NYSE:PRGO) which gained 2.36% to close at 65.58.
The worst performers were Pacific Gas & Electric Co (NYSE:PCG) which was down 17.38% to 32.98 in late trade, Edison International (NYSE:EIX) which lost 12.20% to settle at 53.56 and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which was down 9.51% to 19.030 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Apptio Inc (NASDAQ:APTI) which rose 51.51% to 37.65, Magnegas Applied Technology Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:MNGA) which was up 28.93% to settle at 0.361 and Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) which gained 24.60% to close at 7.8500.
The worst performers were Infinity Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:INFI) which was down 45.42% to 1.31 in late trade, Hudson Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:HDSN) which lost 40.33% to settle at 0.722 and Lumentum Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:LITE) which was down 32.98% to 37.50 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2288 to 777 and 90 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2065 fell and 581 advanced, while 81 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 17.80% to 20.45.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.41% or 5.00 to $1201.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.89% or 1.14 to hit $59.05 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 1.24% or 0.87 to trade at $69.31 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 1.00% to 1.1223, while USD/JPY fell 0.02% to 113.80.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.76% at 97.47.
