Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.99% to hit a new 52-week low, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.58%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.63%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which rose 0.52% or 0.66 points to trade at 128.27 at the close. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) fell 0.05% or 0.02 points to end at 41.95 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was down 0.07% or 0.03 points to 45.54 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 5.02% or 3.68 points to trade at 69.61 in late trade. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) declined 3.67% or 4.18 points to end at 109.62 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) shed 3.61% or 3.27 points to 87.28.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which rose 6.23% to 34.09, AbbVie Inc (NYSE:ABBV) which was up 2.21% to settle at 85.370 and PPL Corporation (NYSE:PPL) which gained 1.66% to close at 28.70.
The worst performers were ConAgra Foods Inc (NYSE:CAG) which was down 16.53% to 24.28 in late trade, Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which lost 9.49% to settle at 49.79 and Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which was down 8.91% to 1.840 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Inpixon (NASDAQ:INPX) which rose 37.12% to 4.1000, SilverSun Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SSNT) which was up 28.89% to settle at 2.9000 and Digital Ally Inc (NASDAQ:DGLY) which gained 26.41% to close at 2.920.
The worst performers were DBV Technologies (NASDAQ:DBVT) which was down 59.29% to 5.76 in late trade, ADMA Biologics Inc (NASDAQ:ADMA) which lost 45.61% to settle at 2.29 and Draper Oakwood Technology Acquisition Inc Class A (NASDAQ:RBZ) which was down 42.50% to 2.95 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2471 to 626 and 69 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2042 fell and 620 advanced, while 72 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 11.25% to 28.38 a new 6-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.61% or 7.70 to $1264.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 4.07% or 1.96 to hit $46.21 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 4.32% or 2.47 to trade at $54.77 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.70% to 1.1456, while USD/JPY fell 1.08% to 111.26.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.66% at 95.843.
