Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Goods and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.86% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.79%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.56%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which rose 1.55% or 2.01 points to trade at 132.00 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) fell 0.21% or 0.46 points to end at 216.75 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was down 0.32% or 0.41 points to 129.14 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 3.42% or 1.87 points to trade at 52.83 in late trade. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 3.29% or 3.84 points to end at 112.86 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 3.21% or 3.72 points to 112.29.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Lennar Corporation (NYSE:LEN) which rose 3.77% to 57.82, Paychex Inc (NASDAQ:PAYX) which was up 1.78% to settle at 83.35 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) which gained 1.55% to close at 132.00.
The worst performers were Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NKTR) which was down 5.97% to 17.33 in late trade, Capri Holdings Ltd (NYSE:CPRI) which lost 5.82% to settle at 29.61 and Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which was down 5.79% to 14.65 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Stars Group Inc (NASDAQ:TSG) which rose 30.05% to 19.91, Resonant Inc (NASDAQ:RESN) which was up 18.32% to settle at 3.230 and Sequential (NASDAQ:SQBG) which gained 17.01% to close at 0.26.
The worst performers were Savara Inc (NASDAQ:SVRA) which was down 58.47% to 1.030 in late trade, Enlivex Therapeutics Ltd (NASDAQ:ENLV) which lost 27.91% to settle at 19.810 and Cancer Genetics Inc (NASDAQ:CGIX) which was down 24.97% to 0.114 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2256 to 627 and 81 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1916 fell and 721 advanced, while 76 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 10.51% to 20.51 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.11% or 16.60 to $1505.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 2.13% or 1.14 to hit $52.48 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $57.49 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.0961, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 107.18.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.08% at 98.697.
