Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Financials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.48%, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.23%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.20%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 0.22% or 0.19 points to trade at 85.71 at the close. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) fell 0.11% or 0.14 points to end at 131.90 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was down 0.20% or 0.11 points to 55.67 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE), which lost 2.64% or 0.96 points to trade at 35.39 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 2.63% or 5.45 points to end at 201.45 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) shed 2.45% or 3.22 points to 128.02.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) which rose 4.86% to 205.78, CenturyLink Inc (NYSE:CTL) which was up 4.17% to settle at 11.23 and Sysco Corporation (NYSE:SYY) which gained 3.17% to close at 72.21.
The worst performers were Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NKTR) which was down 11.19% to 18.58 in late trade, Mosaic Co (NYSE:MOS) which lost 8.19% to settle at 20.75 and Corteva Inc (NYSE:CTVA) which was down 6.51% to 29.5700 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Yangtze River Port and Logistics Ltd (NASDAQ:YRIV) which rose 80.42% to 1.29, Arcadia Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:RKDA) which was up 53.66% to settle at 6.930 and Cellect Biotechnology Ltd (NASDAQ:APOP) which gained 39.76% to close at 0.58.
The worst performers were Grupo Financiero Galicia SA ADR (NASDAQ:GGAL) which was down 56.12% to 16.7500 in late trade, MMTEC Inc (NASDAQ:MTC) which lost 49.14% to settle at 2.70 and Cresud SACIF y A (NASDAQ:CRESY) which was down 38.09% to 6.16 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2103 to 900 and 24 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1768 fell and 892 advanced, while 86 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 17.36% to 21.09.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.92% or 13.90 to $1522.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.48% or 0.26 to hit $54.76 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.22% or 0.13 to trade at $58.32 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1215, while USD/JPY fell 0.03% to 105.25.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 97.225.
