Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.35%, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.42%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.84%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 0.39% or 1.29 points to trade at 331.76 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) fell 0.30% or 0.20 points to end at 65.71 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) was down 0.39% or 0.31 points to 78.66 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 2.75% or 4.31 points to trade at 152.15 in late trade. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 2.57% or 3.44 points to end at 130.24 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) shed 2.39% or 5.66 points to 231.56.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which rose 2.02% to 39.46, Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) which was up 1.86% to settle at 344.93 and Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which gained 1.54% to close at 32.23.
The worst performers were Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) which was down 6.77% to 172.56 in late trade, Newell Brands Inc (NYSE:NWL) which lost 6.52% to settle at 26.79 and Mattel Inc (NASDAQ:MAT) which was down 4.62% to 13.22 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were NF Energy Saving Corporation (NASDAQ:NFEC) which rose 92.08% to 1.9400, Geron Corporation (NASDAQ:GERN) which was up 28.78% to settle at 4.340 and Opiant Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:OPNT) which gained 27.55% to close at 26.3400.
The worst performers were Cidara Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CDTX) which was down 24.05% to 6.00 in late trade, Reading International B Inc (NASDAQ:RDIB) which lost 19.99% to settle at 23.530 and Prana Biotechnology Ltd (NASDAQ:PRAN) which was down 18.49% to 2.1600 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2425 to 689 and 91 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1826 fell and 728 advanced, while 110 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 23.42% to 19.50.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.34% or 4.40 to $1316.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.34% or 0.21 to hit $62.20 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.15% or 0.10 to trade at $66.11 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.41% to 1.2340, while USD/JPY rose 0.10% to 106.12.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.39% at 89.45.
