Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.33% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.37%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 2.09%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which rose 1.95% or 1.65 points to trade at 86.47 at the close. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 1.35% or 1.31 points to end at 98.54 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was up 0.76% or 0.33 points to 43.58 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 3.41% or 1.79 points to trade at 50.71 in late trade. Visa Inc (NYSE:V) declined 3.25% or 4.40 points to end at 130.93 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 2.88% or 4.74 points to 159.81.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Campbell Soup Company (NYSE:CPB) which rose 9.40% to 42.23, Scana Corporation (NYSE:SCG) which was up 3.76% to settle at 38.40 and FirstEnergy Corporation (NYSE:FE) which gained 3.16% to close at 36.20.
The worst performers were Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 7.85% to 58.54 in late trade, Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which lost 6.90% to settle at 53.16 and Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which was down 6.47% to 384.48 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Xenetic Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:XBIO) which rose 103.90% to 5.750, Ability Inc (NASDAQ:ABIL) which was up 98.41% to settle at 10.00 and Innovate Biopharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:INNT) which gained 39.48% to close at 18.76.
The worst performers were Merrimack Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:MACK) which was down 43.83% to 5.140 in late trade, Sophiris Bio Inc (NASDAQ:SPHS) which lost 40.27% to settle at 2.240 and Erytech Pharma SA ADR (NASDAQ:ERYP) which was down 28.97% to 12.75 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2353 to 738 and 94 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1982 fell and 612 advanced, while 87 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 26.94% to 17.48 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.24% or 3.10 to $1267.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.73% or 0.50 to hit $68.08 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.73% or 0.55 to trade at $74.77 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.44% to 1.1705, while USD/JPY fell 0.18% to 109.77.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.27% at 93.94.
