Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Healthcare and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.21%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.96%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.02%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 0.06% or 0.03 points to trade at 51.05 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) fell 0.11% or 0.08 points to end at 72.43 and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) was down 0.13% or 0.13 points to 101.14 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which lost 4.04% or 4.31 points to trade at 102.29 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 3.70% or 2.19 points to end at 57.01 and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) shed 2.75% or 1.88 points to 66.41.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Electronic Arts Inc (NASDAQ:EA) which rose 13.70% to 73.38, Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was up 6.91% to settle at 11.61 and Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) which gained 4.36% to close at 12.46.
The worst performers were Staples Inc (NASDAQ:SPLS) which was down 18.34% to 8.46 in late trade, Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which lost 15.17% to settle at 31.38 and Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which was down 12.69% to 13.55 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ChemoCentryx Inc (NASDAQ:CCXI) which rose 53.85% to 4.600, Turtle Beach Corp (NASDAQ:HEAR) which was up 43.79% to settle at 1.320 and Fairway Group Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:FWM) which gained 30.05% to close at 0.1900.
The worst performers were Office Depot Inc (NASDAQ:ODP) which was down 40.39% to 3.63 in late trade, Fossil Group Inc (NASDAQ:FOSL) which lost 29.08% to settle at 28.44 and Epirus Biopharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:EPRS) which was down 19.44% to 0.870 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2089 to 1225 and 31 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1815 fell and 744 advanced, while 58 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.75% to 14.55.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 1.11% or 14.10 to $1278.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 3.20% or 1.43 to hit $46.09 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 4.17% or 1.90 to trade at $47.42 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.47% to 1.1426, while USD/JPY fell 0.77% to 108.44.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.45% at 93.80.
