Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.04%, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.65%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 1.38% or 1.26 points to trade at 92.70 at the close. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 1.23% or 0.73 points to end at 60.03 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 0.97% or 1.82 points to 188.50 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 5.37% or 2.45 points to trade at 43.16 in late trade. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) declined 5.04% or 15.86 points to end at 298.78 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 2.96% or 12.27 points to 402.65.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) which rose 12.03% to 168.60, DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc (NYSE:DVA) which was up 7.13% to settle at 134.69 and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) which gained 5.54% to close at 18.10.
The worst performers were Albemarle Corp (NYSE:ALB) which was down 17.87% to 109.40 in late trade, Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ:QRVO) which lost 5.76% to settle at 113.29 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) which was down 5.37% to 43.16 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Airship AI Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:AISP) which rose 200.00% to 4.95, Sunshine Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:SBFM) which was up 86.19% to settle at 0.08 and BeyondSpring Inc (NASDAQ:BYSI) which gained 76.83% to close at 2.90.
The worst performers were Quoin Pharmaceuticals Ltd DRC (NASDAQ:QNRX) which was down 48.28% to 1.50 in late trade, Presto Automation Inc (NASDAQ:PRST) which lost 28.57% to settle at 0.25 and Blue Star Foods Corp (NASDAQ:BSFC) which was down 28.47% to 0.10 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1716 to 1136 and 80 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2212 fell and 1198 advanced, while 98 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.19% to 14.46.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.52% or 11.10 to $2,137.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 0.74% or 0.58 to hit $78.16 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.91% or 0.75 to trade at $82.05 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.03% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.32% to 150.02.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.04% at 103.73.
