Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.02%, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.58%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.98%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which rose 0.92% or 1.50 points to trade at 165.18 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 0.61% or 2.98 points to end at 491.92 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 0.54% or 0.20 points to 37.30 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which lost 5.22% or 2.89 points to trade at 52.50 in late trade. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 2.78% or 4.47 points to end at 156.12 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 2.63% or 0.78 points to 28.88.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Brown & Brown Inc (NYSE:BRO) which rose 3.18% to 63.00, Centene Corp (NYSE:CNC) which was up 2.41% to settle at 69.29 and Fiserv Inc (NASDAQ:FISV) which gained 2.38% to close at 120.09.
The worst performers were First Republic Bank (NYSE:FRC) which was down 49.25% to 8.12 in late trade, SVB Financial Group (OTC:SIVBQ) which lost 19.17% to settle at 0.58 and Signature Bank (OTC:SBNY) which was down 15.71% to 0.13 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Centogene B V (NASDAQ:CNTG) which rose 120.27% to 1.63, CXApp Inc (NASDAQ:CXAI) which was up 98.73% to settle at 12.50 and Apollomics Inc (NASDAQ:APLM) which gained 59.65% to close at 6.45.
The worst performers were TRACON Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:TCON) which was down 46.63% to 0.95 in late trade, Tempo Automation Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:TMPO) which lost 42.25% to settle at 0.46 and Vyant Bio Inc (NASDAQ:VYNT) which was down 36.71% to 0.35 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2494 to 504 and 84 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2815 fell and 770 advanced, while 158 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 11.31% to 18.80.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.33% or 6.55 to $2,006.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.98% or 1.56 to hit $77.20 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 2.29% or 1.89 to trade at $80.65 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.60% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.38% to 133.71.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.49% at 101.57.
