Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Consumer Goods and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.00%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.57%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.19%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which rose 0.27% or 0.12 points to trade at 45.28 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 0.16% or 0.17 points to end at 103.90 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 0.15% or 0.08 points to 51.86 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 2.48% or 8.41 points to trade at 330.26 in late trade. DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP) declined 2.24% or 1.58 points to end at 68.99 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 1.53% or 4.10 points to 264.43.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which rose 4.19% to 44.05, PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) which was up 3.88% to settle at 83.31 and Expedia Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) which gained 3.42% to close at 113.28.
The worst performers were Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which was down 20.23% to 38.22 in late trade, Envision Healthcare Corp (NYSE:EVHC) which lost 7.75% to settle at 39.41 and Alaska Air Group Inc (NYSE:ALK) which was down 4.54% to 65.67 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Arcadia Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:RKDA) which rose 311.23% to 47.990, Yield10 Bioscience Inc (NASDAQ:YTEN) which was up 73.68% to settle at 2.970 and Origin Agritech Limited (NASDAQ:SEED) which gained 65.43% to close at 1.360.
The worst performers were EV Energy Partners LP (NASDAQ:EVEP) which was down 66.43% to 0.195 in late trade, Auris Medical Holding AG (NASDAQ:EARS) which lost 34.52% to settle at 1.650 and Sunesis Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SNSS) which was down 15.67% to 3.5800 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1791 to 1281 and 124 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1573 fell and 974 advanced, while 109 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.50% to 17.25.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.13% or 1.70 to $1325.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 0.33% or 0.20 to hit $60.91 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.28% or 0.18 to trade at $64.82 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.20% to 1.2366, while USD/JPY fell 0.25% to 106.31.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 89.75.
