Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.96% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.10%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.12%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which rose 0.08% or 0.12 points to trade at 154.66 at the close. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) added 0.02% or 0.02 points to end at 114.41 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was down 0.02% or 0.02 points to 107.86 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which lost 2.82% or 1.49 points to trade at 51.38 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 2.52% or 4.84 points to end at 186.94 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 2.44% or 4.01 points to 160.62.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were EPAM Systems Inc (NYSE:EPAM) which rose 2.09% to 424.71, Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which was up 2.00% to settle at 9.67 and Paycom Soft (NYSE:PAYC) which gained 1.74% to close at 357.29.
The worst performers were CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which was down 6.48% to 106.00 in late trade, Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which lost 5.52% to settle at 29.76 and The Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which was down 4.97% to 57.34 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Mobile Global Esports Inc (NASDAQ:MGAM) which rose 103.85% to 5.30, Newage Inc (NASDAQ:NBEV) which was up 74.20% to settle at 0.36 and In8bio Inc (NASDAQ:INAB) which gained 39.39% to close at 2.76.
The worst performers were Amesite Operating Co (NASDAQ:AMST) which was down 51.45% to 0.40 in late trade, Baudax Bio Inc (NASDAQ:BXRX) which lost 43.07% to settle at 0.31 and Clarus Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:CRXT) which was down 36.94% to 0.10 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2488 to 643 and 133 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2587 fell and 1138 advanced, while 248 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was unchanged 0.00% to 26.21 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.81% or 14.25 to $1,735.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 4.88% or 4.73 to hit $92.28 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 4.36% or 4.49 to trade at $98.44 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.25% to 1.00, while USD/JPY rose 0.08% to 138.80.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.03% at 108.75.
