Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology, Financials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.93%, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.45%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 2.13%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 1.10% or 1.70 points to trade at 156.62 at the close. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) added 0.33% or 0.15 points to end at 45.74 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 0.05% or 0.07 points to 141.84 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 3.22% or 5.16 points to trade at 155.27 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 2.39% or 5.51 points to end at 225.50 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) shed 1.96% or 0.62 points to 31.00.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Perrigo Co (NYSE:PRGO) which rose 15.78% to 76.84, Darden Restaurants Inc (NYSE:DRI) which was up 1.54% to settle at 82.53 and FirstEnergy Corporation (NYSE:FE) which gained 1.36% to close at 32.04.
The worst performers were Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which was down 10.25% to 20.67 in late trade, Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which lost 7.63% to settle at 55.65 and Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) which was down 6.12% to 122.12 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cyanotech Corporation (NASDAQ:CYAN) which rose 32.35% to 4.50, Adomani Inc (NASDAQ:ADOM) which was up 27.93% to settle at 10.49 and MYnd Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:MYND) which gained 25.00% to close at 4.25.
The worst performers were Forterra Inc (NASDAQ:FRTA) which was down 57.56% to 3.51 in late trade, Synacor Inc (NASDAQ:SYNC) which lost 32.39% to settle at 2.400 and InVivo Therapeutics Holdings (NASDAQ:NVIV) which was down 30.00% to 1.23 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2671 to 492 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1990 fell and 530 advanced, while 107 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 41.67% to 15.74 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.92% or 11.81 to $1291.11 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.24% or 1.11 to hit $48.45 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 1.76% or 0.93 to trade at $51.77 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.17% to 1.1778, while USD/JPY fell 0.77% to 109.22.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.16% at 93.26.
