Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Telecoms, Basic Materials and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.88% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.78%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.56%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which rose 0.49% or 1.18 points to trade at 240.30 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 0.47% or 1.54 points to end at 332.67 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was up 0.07% or 0.17 points to 252.28 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM), which lost 2.22% or 3.55 points to trade at 156.12 in late trade. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) declined 1.75% or 1.52 points to end at 85.36 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 1.72% or 2.66 points to 152.00.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META) which rose 3.67% to 162.93, Las Vegas Sands Corp (NYSE:LVS) which was up 2.67% to settle at 37.63 and MarketAxess Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MKTX) which gained 1.88% to close at 248.59.
The worst performers were PVH Corp (NYSE:PVH) which was down 10.49% to 56.25 in late trade, HP Inc (NYSE:HPQ) which lost 7.68% to settle at 28.71 and The Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which was down 5.81% to 53.87 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Nuwellis Inc (NASDAQ:NUWE) which rose 131.71% to 1.46, GreenPro Capital Corp (NASDAQ:GRNQ) which was up 63.87% to settle at 2.54 and American Virtual Cloud Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:AVCT) which gained 43.39% to close at 0.46.
The worst performers were Newage Inc (NASDAQ:NBEV) which was down 36.67% to 0.23 in late trade, Mobile Global Esports Inc (NASDAQ:MGAM) which lost 31.70% to settle at 3.62 and ShiftPixy Inc (NASDAQ:PIXY) which was down 26.65% to 0.14 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2116 to 993 and 138 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2038 fell and 1660 advanced, while 260 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.30% to 25.87.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.83% or 14.40 to $1,721.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 3.07% or 2.81 to hit $88.83 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 2.93% or 2.87 to trade at $94.97 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.39% to 1.01, while USD/JPY rose 0.13% to 138.98.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.08% at 108.66.
