Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.86%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.60%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.08%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 3.15% or 1.23 points to trade at 40.33 at the close. Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON) added 1.95% or 3.84 points to end at 200.91 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 1.94% or 1.78 points to 93.45 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which lost 19.74% or 53.61 points to trade at 218.01 in late trade. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) declined 3.38% or 14.50 points to end at 414.67 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 1.52% or 6.94 points to 450.23.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were HP Inc (NYSE:HPQ) which rose 16.95% to 38.36, Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) which was up 13.42% to settle at 81.55 and Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which gained 5.48% to close at 8.08.
The worst performers were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) which was down 19.74% to 218.01 in late trade, ServiceNow Inc (NYSE:NOW) which lost 11.98% to settle at 643.50 and Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE:HRL) which was down 9.71% to 30.79 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Summit Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:SMMT) which rose 272.06% to 10.92, JE Cleantech Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:JCSE) which was up 84.92% to settle at 1.30 and Momentus Inc (NASDAQ:MNTS) which gained 66.35% to close at 0.87.
The worst performers were Maxeon Solar Technologies Ltd (NASDAQ:MAXN) which was down 34.73% to 2.03 in late trade, Nutanix Inc (NASDAQ:NTNX) which lost 23.10% to settle at 56.36 and Sonoma Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SNOA) which was down 21.15% to 0.21 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2093 to 754 and 65 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1926 rose and 1417 declined, while 134 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.33% to 14.47.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.03% or 0.80 to $2,363.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 1.67% or 1.32 to hit $77.91 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 1.76% or 1.47 to trade at $81.96 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.29% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.48% to 156.84.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.32% at 104.70.
