Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Healthcare, Technology and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.78%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.68%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.81%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 0.96% or 0.66 points to trade at 69.50 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 0.47% or 0.48 points to end at 102.92 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) was up 0.14% or 0.12 points to 84.51 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.79% or 0.98 points to trade at 53.92 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 1.73% or 2.69 points to end at 152.59 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) shed 1.63% or 3.35 points to 202.41.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Mattel Inc (NASDAQ:MAT) which rose 6.13% to 15.06, Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ:SYMC) which was up 4.35% to settle at 22.33 and Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) which gained 3.50% to close at 48.48.
The worst performers were Agilent Technologies Inc (NYSE:A) which was down 9.70% to 62.50 in late trade, DR Horton Inc (NYSE:DHI) which lost 6.73% to settle at 40.58 and Lennar Corporation (NYSE:LEN) which was down 5.67% to 51.21 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Red Violet Inc (NASDAQ:RDVT) which rose 75.31% to 9.94, Euro Tech Holdings Company Limited (NASDAQ:CLWT) which was up 40.62% to settle at 4.500 and MEI Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:MEIP) which gained 34.39% to close at 3.400.
The worst performers were Cesca Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:KOOL) which was down 29.01% to 0.7951 in late trade, Immune Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:IMNP) which lost 23.13% to settle at 0.2652 and SenesTech Inc (NASDAQ:SNES) which was down 22.20% to 0.34 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1948 to 1131 and 110 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1282 rose and 1266 declined, while 118 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 12.76% to 14.58.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.97% or 26.00 to $1292.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.27% or 0.19 to hit $71.15 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $78.23 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.70% to 1.1843, while USD/JPY rose 0.59% to 110.31.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.59% at 93.10.
