Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.75%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.82%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.81%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 1.34% or 0.73 points to trade at 55.02 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 0.96% or 1.25 points to end at 130.79 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 0.90% or 1.03 points to 115.27 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 2.81% or 2.32 points to trade at 80.18 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 2.40% or 4.89 points to end at 198.85 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 2.07% or 2.38 points to 112.79.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Constellation Brands Inc Class A (NYSE:STZ) which rose 5.38% to 222.10, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which was up 4.02% to settle at 112.99 and Jefferies Financial Group Inc (NYSE:JEF) which gained 3.10% to close at 22.93.
The worst performers were Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which was down 8.25% to 11.45 in late trade, Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) which lost 5.36% to settle at 66.19 and Akamai Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:AKAM) which was down 4.97% to 66.32 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Vaxart Inc (NASDAQ:VXRT) which rose 77.97% to 5.250, I-AM Capital Acquisition Co (NASDAQ:IAM) which was up 56.38% to settle at 10.10 and Histogenics Corp (NASDAQ:HSGX) which gained 51.52% to close at 1.000.
The worst performers were Pain Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PTIE) which was down 56.55% to 1.260 in late trade, Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:HMNY) which lost 42.47% to settle at 0.021 and Inpixon (NASDAQ:INPX) which was down 28.57% to 0.3000 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2468 to 651 and 57 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2031 fell and 592 advanced, while 95 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 22.22% to 14.19.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.02% or 0.30 to $1203.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 2.46% or 1.88 to hit $74.53 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 1.80% or 1.55 to trade at $84.74 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.31% to 1.1513, while USD/JPY fell 0.52% to 113.94.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.25% at 95.43.
