Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.62%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.37%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.19%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 2.99% or 2.70 points to trade at 93.05 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 1.89% or 0.73 points to end at 39.29 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.76% or 2.72 points to 358.43 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 7.89% or 17.18 points to trade at 200.52 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 3.18% or 3.34 points to end at 101.72 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 2.43% or 3.58 points to 143.69.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which rose 8.31% to 158.74, Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which was up 4.45% to settle at 52.23 and AutoZone Inc (NYSE:AZO) which gained 3.91% to close at 2,669.56.
The worst performers were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) which was down 7.89% to 200.52 in late trade, First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) which lost 7.07% to settle at 149.10 and Johnson Controls International PLC (NYSE:JCI) which was down 6.99% to 52.40 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Phunware Inc (NASDAQ:PHUN) which rose 453.49% to 0.42, DatChat Inc (NASDAQ:DATS) which was up 50.71% to settle at 3.18 and Remark Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MARK) which gained 47.80% to close at 0.68.
The worst performers were Allakos Inc (NASDAQ:ALLK) which was down 60.20% to 1.19 in late trade, LQR House Inc (NASDAQ:LQR) which lost 44.81% to settle at 2.02 and Aslan Pharmaceuticals Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:ASLN) which was down 38.40% to 0.58 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2203 to 690 and 52 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2489 fell and 971 advanced, while 96 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.45% to 13.84.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.98% or 20.15 to $2,031.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 1.00% or 0.73 to hit $72.06 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.40% or 0.31 to trade at $77.84 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.65% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 1.01% to 147.21.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.92% at 103.09.
