Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Industrials, Oil & Gas and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.59%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.58%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.52%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 1.66% or 2.02 points to trade at 123.69 at the close. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) added 1.26% or 3.09 points to end at 247.53 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) was up 1.10% or 0.39 points to 35.85 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 5.40% or 12.42 points to trade at 217.45 in late trade. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 2.22% or 2.32 points to end at 102.25 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) shed 2.12% or 3.66 points to 168.63.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which rose 3.80% to 51.35, Extra Space Storage Inc (NYSE:EXR) which was up 3.66% to settle at 160.17 and Electronic Arts Inc (NASDAQ:EA) which gained 3.21% to close at 125.24.
The worst performers were Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which was down 8.01% to 127.43 in late trade, United Rentals Inc (NYSE:URI) which lost 7.70% to settle at 359.13 and Marathon Petroleum Corp (NYSE:MPC) which was down 7.24% to 125.82 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Secoo Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:SECO) which rose 139.34% to 1.46, InflaRx N.V. (NASDAQ:IFRX) which was up 83.90% to settle at 3.77 and Cardlytics Inc (NASDAQ:CDLX) which gained 80.87% to close at 6.24.
The worst performers were Nogin Inc (NASDAQ:NOGN) which was down 68.05% to 2.08 in late trade, Clearmind Medicine Inc (NASDAQ:CMND) which lost 62.21% to settle at 0.39 and Oncternal Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ONCT) which was down 56.92% to 0.34 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2106 to 869 and 121 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2584 fell and 1046 advanced, while 163 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.43% to 19.00.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.93% or 38.55 to $2,038.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 0.21% or 0.17 to hit $80.59 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.07% or 0.06 to trade at $84.87 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.57% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.57% to 131.65.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.53% at 101.24.
