Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Utilities and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.56% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.13%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.43%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 2.58% or 13.14 points to trade at 522.91 at the close. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) added 1.51% or 1.75 points to end at 117.87 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 1.33% or 4.36 points to 331.62 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which lost 3.43% or 5.50 points to trade at 154.78 in late trade. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) declined 2.71% or 6.84 points to end at 245.38 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) shed 2.03% or 4.04 points to 195.37.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) which rose 8.37% to 497.24, Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which was up 7.48% to settle at 65.23 and Paramount Global Class B (NASDAQ:PARA) which gained 5.16% to close at 23.05.
The worst performers were Adobe Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:ADBE) which was down 16.79% to 309.13 in late trade, Albemarle Corp (NYSE:ALB) which lost 6.49% to settle at 286.75 and West Pharmaceutical Services Inc (NYSE:WST) which was down 5.88% to 273.73 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Heartbeam Inc (NASDAQ:BEAT) which rose 85.60% to 2.32, Neurobo Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:NRBO) which was up 47.21% to settle at 24.82 and Nabriva Therapeutics AG (NASDAQ:NBRV) which gained 40.65% to close at 0.27.
The worst performers were Shuttle Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SHPH) which was down 55.65% to 16.63 in late trade, Eloxx Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ELOX) which lost 40.97% to settle at 0.22 and Color Star Technology Co Ltd (NASDAQ:CSCW) which was down 39.54% to 0.07 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2194 to 935 and 113 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1992 fell and 1758 advanced, while 265 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.42% to 26.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 2.08% or 35.55 to $1,673.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 3.84% or 3.40 to hit $85.08 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 3.55% or 3.34 to trade at $90.76 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.19% to 1.00, while USD/JPY rose 0.23% to 143.48.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 109.44.
