Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Technology and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.52%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.76%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.15%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which rose 1.16% or 1.89 points to trade at 165.37 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 0.27% or 0.89 points to end at 333.03 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 0.06% or 0.07 points to 108.73 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 3.57% or 1.24 points to trade at 33.53 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 1.43% or 0.41 points to end at 28.19 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 1.03% or 2.86 points to 274.51.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Progressive Corp (NYSE:PGR) which rose 8.87% to 136.14, MarketAxess Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MKTX) which was up 5.49% to settle at 245.33 and Allstate Corp (NYSE:ALL) which gained 4.44% to close at 109.74.
The worst performers were Jack Henry & Associates Inc (NASDAQ:JKHY) which was down 7.03% to 156.47 in late trade, DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which lost 5.95% to settle at 7.11 and ResMed Inc (NYSE:RMD) which was down 5.01% to 173.70 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ebet Inc (NASDAQ:EBET) which rose 109.16% to 0.09, Digital Brands Group Inc (NASDAQ:DBGI) which was up 91.27% to settle at 0.78 and Tivic Health Systems Inc (NASDAQ:TIVC) which gained 80.11% to close at 0.07.
The worst performers were RVL Pharmaceuticals PLC (NASDAQ:RVLP) which was down 50.85% to 0.21 in late trade, Impel Neuropharma Inc (NASDAQ:IMPL) which lost 42.04% to settle at 0.63 and Energous Co (NASDAQ:WATT) which was down 35.16% to 2.22 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2139 to 782 and 85 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2480 fell and 1013 advanced, while 107 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.94% to 16.78.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.59% or 11.50 to $1,923.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.21% or 1.79 to hit $79.20 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 1.92% or 1.63 to trade at $83.26 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.25% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.53% to 146.34.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.26% at 103.36.
