Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.47%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.53%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.00%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 2.12% or 2.80 points to trade at 134.71 at the close. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) added 1.57% or 2.11 points to end at 136.36 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 1.36% or 1.92 points to 143.21 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which lost 3.83% or 2.02 points to trade at 50.77 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 3.69% or 13.34 points to end at 348.09 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 1.44% or 0.76 points to 52.16.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Masco Corporation (NYSE:MAS) which rose 8.11% to 42.38, TechnipFMC PLC (NYSE:FTI) which was up 6.03% to settle at 27.98 and LKQ Corporation (NASDAQ:LKQ) which gained 5.11% to close at 27.58.
The worst performers were Align Technology Inc (NASDAQ:ALGN) which was down 26.99% to 200.90 in late trade, Varian Medical Systems Inc (NYSE:VAR) which lost 9.51% to settle at 121.09 and American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which was down 8.44% to 31.67 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were My Size Inc (NASDAQ:MYSZ) which rose 48.89% to 0.67, Anika Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ANIK) which was up 28.86% to settle at 52.60 and Gemphire Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:GEMP) which gained 28.47% to close at 0.93.
The worst performers were iPic Entertainment Inc (NASDAQ:IPIC) which was down 28.31% to 1.8950 in late trade, Align Technology Inc (NASDAQ:ALGN) which lost 26.99% to settle at 200.90 and Neuralstem Inc (NASDAQ:CUR) which was down 25.60% to 3.7200 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2177 to 797 and 96 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1897 fell and 757 advanced, while 89 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.55% to 12.74.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.64% or 9.15 to $1414.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.05% or 0.03 to hit $55.91 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.03% or 0.02 to trade at $63.10 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1147, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 108.64.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.07% at 97.523.
