Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.41%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.78%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.97%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 4.26% or 5.68 points to trade at 139.00 at the close. Raytheon Technologies Corp (NYSE:RTX) added 3.98% or 2.30 points to end at 60.10 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) was up 3.80% or 3.63 points to 99.17 in late trade.
Biggest losers included International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which lost 1.86% or 2.26 points to trade at 119.12 in late trade. Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM) declined 1.79% or 0.81 points to end at 44.56 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 1.77% or 1.12 points to 61.98.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which rose 18.25% to 14.45, Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which was up 11.58% to settle at 8.19 and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which gained 9.78% to close at 14.03.
The worst performers were National Oilwell Varco Inc (NYSE:NOV) which was down 6.77% to 12.12 in late trade, DXC Technology Co (NYSE:DXC) which lost 6.65% to settle at 15.85 and Boston Scientific Corp (NYSE:BSX) which was down 6.43% to 34.79 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Surface Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:SURF) which rose 53.35% to 5.95, Seneca Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:SNCA) which was up 49.69% to settle at 1.230 and ReTo Eco-Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:RETO) which gained 46.19% to close at 1.140.
The worst performers were Akorn Inc (NASDAQ:AKRX) which was down 33.87% to 0.185 in late trade, Luckin Coffee (NASDAQ:LK) which lost 28.72% to settle at 2.01 and CUI Global Inc (NASDAQ:OEG) which was down 25.47% to 0.670 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1452 to 1422 and 67 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1573 fell and 1077 advanced, while 70 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.50% to 29.53.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.45% or 25.35 to $1726.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.28% or 0.43 to hit $33.92 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.11% or 0.04 to trade at $36.03 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.01% to 1.0948, while USD/JPY rose 0.03% to 107.64.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.31% at 99.440.
