Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Financials and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.40%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.33%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.21%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which rose 1.81% or 2.70 points to trade at 151.61 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 1.39% or 1.58 points to end at 115.21 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) was up 1.04% or 0.75 points to 72.96 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 1.69% or 1.86 points to trade at 108.01 in late trade. DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP) declined 1.56% or 1.06 points to end at 66.89 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 1.56% or 3.62 points to 228.88.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ALXN) which rose 5.13% to 135.61, Foot Locker Inc (NYSE:FL) which was up 4.50% to settle at 50.12 and Scana Corporation (NYSE:SCG) which gained 3.91% to close at 36.63.
The worst performers were Cintas Corporation (NASDAQ:CTAS) which was down 5.54% to 201.16 in late trade, EQT Corporation (NYSE:EQT) which lost 5.31% to settle at 44.44 and Range Resources Corporation (NYSE:RRC) which was down 4.78% to 16.53 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were CDTi Advanced Materials Inc (NASDAQ:CDTI) which rose 47.37% to 2.8000, Sphere 3D Corp (NASDAQ:ANY) which was up 37.18% to settle at 0.380 and Aldeyra The (NASDAQ:ALDX) which gained 34.85% to close at 13.35.
The worst performers were Jaguar Health Inc (NASDAQ:JAGX) which was down 36.90% to 1.060 in late trade, FlexShopper Inc (NASDAQ:FPAY) which lost 27.23% to settle at 0.851 and Ultra Petroleum Corp (NASDAQ:UPL) which was down 23.22% to 0.975 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1940 to 1087 and 128 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1696 fell and 897 advanced, while 119 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.54% to 12.86.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.51% or 6.20 to $1198.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.36% or 0.26 to hit $72.02 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.14% or 0.11 to trade at $81.15 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.20% to 1.1743, while USD/JPY fell 0.27% to 112.67.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.15% at 93.87.
