Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Financials, Healthcare and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.33%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.67%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.85%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which rose 4.44% or 7.40 points to trade at 174.17 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 3.24% or 5.28 points to end at 168.00 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) was up 0.93% or 1.19 points to 129.56 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which lost 3.36% or 9.57 points to trade at 275.49 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 2.70% or 1.25 points to end at 45.13 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) shed 1.96% or 2.33 points to 116.51.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which rose 13.09% to 272.38, Intuitive Surgical Inc (NASDAQ:ISRG) which was up 8.99% to settle at 211.14 and Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which gained 5.32% to close at 123.96.
The worst performers were Generac Holdings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) which was down 25.34% to 110.30 in late trade, M&T Bank Corp (NYSE:MTB) which lost 13.89% to settle at 163.06 and Northern Trust Corporation (NASDAQ:NTRS) which was down 9.15% to 79.59 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Mullen Automotive Inc (NASDAQ:MULN) which rose 57.12% to 0.34, Scopus Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:SCPS) which was up 51.59% to settle at 0.37 and SenesTech Inc (NASDAQ:SNES) which gained 46.55% to close at 0.34.
The worst performers were Olaplex Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:OLPX) which was down 56.69% to 4.24 in late trade, Agrify Corp (NASDAQ:AGFY) which lost 42.44% to settle at 2.55 and Sientra Inc (NASDAQ:SIEN) which was down 37.36% to 0.38 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2369 to 784 and 112 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2712 fell and 1086 advanced, while 218 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.89% to 30.77.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.32% or 21.80 to $1,634.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 3.23% or 2.65 to hit $84.72 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 2.54% or 2.29 to trade at $92.32 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.79% to 0.98, while USD/JPY rose 0.43% to 149.90.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.73% at 112.81.
