Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.30%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.52%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.21%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 1.57% or 7.36 points to trade at 476.75 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 0.86% or 1.28 points to end at 149.44 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 0.84% or 0.93 points to 111.16 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 6.00% or 2.10 points to trade at 32.90 in late trade. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) declined 3.40% or 7.38 points to end at 209.59 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) shed 2.56% or 0.83 points to 31.56.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which rose 4.56% to 142.77, Corteva Inc (NYSE:CTVA) which was up 3.59% to settle at 58.57 and FMC Corporation (NYSE:FMC) which gained 3.40% to close at 108.86.
The worst performers were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) which was down 6.00% to 32.90 in late trade, Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which lost 5.73% to settle at 112.11 and Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 5.46% to 259.46 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Advanced Human Imaging Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:AHI) which rose 101.35% to 1.49, Root Inc (NASDAQ:ROOT) which was up 59.80% to settle at 9.62 and U Power Ltd (NASDAQ:UCAR) which gained 48.49% to close at 8.36.
The worst performers were Pieris Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:PIRS) which was down 70.86% to 0.26 in late trade, Oncorus Inc (OTC:ONCR) which lost 54.21% to settle at 0.06 and Toughbuilt Industries Inc (NASDAQ:TBLT) which was down 53.70% to 0.26 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1490 to 1450 and 141 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2091 fell and 1449 advanced, while 152 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.90% to 13.20 a new 3-year low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.18% or 3.45 to $1,944.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.92% or 1.37 to hit $72.56 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 1.63% or 1.24 to trade at $77.14 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.66% to 1.10, while USD/JPY rose 0.26% to 141.82.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.45% at 101.67.
