Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.30%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.17%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.13%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Visa Inc (NYSE:V), which rose 0.68% or 0.96 points to trade at 142.10 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 0.60% or 1.19 points to end at 200.16 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 0.47% or 0.50 points to 107.56 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 2.03% or 2.84 points to trade at 136.79 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 1.25% or 3.00 points to end at 236.34 and Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM) shed 1.10% or 0.88 points to 79.08.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which rose 6.65% to 22.290, Synopsys Inc (NASDAQ:SNPS) which was up 6.39% to settle at 100.72 and Tractor Supply Company (NASDAQ:TSCO) which gained 2.97% to close at 88.86.
The worst performers were L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which was down 11.41% to 28.25 in late trade, Hanesbrands Inc (NYSE:HBI) which lost 3.37% to settle at 17.78 and Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE:HRL) which was down 3.06% to 37.33 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Obalon Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OBLN) which rose 52.00% to 2.66, TMSR Holding Company Ltd (NASDAQ:TMSR) which was up 33.61% to settle at 4.81 and Lantronix Inc (NASDAQ:LTRX) which gained 19.67% to close at 5.050.
The worst performers were Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:HMNY) which was down 32.44% to 0.020 in late trade, PAVmed Inc (NASDAQ:PAVM) which lost 19.57% to settle at 1.11 and Akorn Inc (NASDAQ:AKRX) which was down 17.56% to 14.93 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2001 to 1021 and 137 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1462 fell and 1086 advanced, while 148 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.98% to 12.37.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.96% or 11.50 to $1191.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 0.01% or 0.01 to hit $67.87 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.04% or 0.03 to trade at $74.81 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.47% to 1.1541, while USD/JPY rose 0.62% to 111.25.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.58% at 95.55.
