Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Industrials and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.25%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.45%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.50%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 3.69% or 8.55 points to trade at 240.50 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 0.96% or 1.13 points to end at 118.40 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was up 0.70% or 1.38 points to 198.90 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 2.49% or 2.13 points to trade at 83.57 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 1.65% or 2.30 points to end at 136.76 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 1.54% or 3.27 points to 208.48.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Centene Corp (NYSE:CNC) which rose 6.56% to 56.04, Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which was up 5.75% to settle at 12.14 and Cigna Corp (NYSE:CI) which gained 3.91% to close at 158.80.
The worst performers were Affiliated Managers Group Inc (NYSE:AMG) which was down 11.60% to 97.96 in late trade, IPG Photonics Corporation (NASDAQ:IPGP) which lost 5.82% to settle at 161.51 and Stanley Black & Decker Inc (NYSE:SWK) which was down 4.36% to 146.40 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Aemetis Inc (NASDAQ:AMTX) which rose 48.28% to 1.2900, Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc (NASDAQ:SBGI) which was up 34.55% to settle at 60.48 and Athenex Inc (NASDAQ:ATNX) which gained 28.36% to close at 12.99.
The worst performers were Freds Inc (NASDAQ:FRED) which was down 53.62% to 0.64 in late trade, Evine Live Inc (NASDAQ:EVLV) which lost 14.61% to settle at 0.520 and Tremont Mortgage Trust (NASDAQ:TRMT) which was down 11.78% to 8.84 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1710 to 1234 and 141 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1447 fell and 1201 advanced, while 90 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 19.97% to 15.44 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.07% or 0.95 to $1282.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.94% or 0.58 to hit $62.52 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.64% or 0.46 to trade at $70.90 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.07% to 1.1204, while USD/JPY fell 0.09% to 110.67.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.03% at 97.292.
