Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Financials, Healthcare and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.18%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.29%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.58%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 1.90% or 1.40 points to trade at 75.04 at the close. EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) added 1.00% or 0.68 points to end at 68.78 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was up 0.72% or 0.32 points to 45.04 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which lost 2.29% or 3.65 points to trade at 155.67 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 1.98% or 1.08 points to end at 53.45 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) shed 1.78% or 1.17 points to 64.64.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which rose 9.43% to 35.40, Broadcom Ltd (NASDAQ:AVGO) which was up 4.94% to settle at 162.56 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which gained 4.22% to close at 11.11.
The worst performers were The Charles Schwab Corporation (NYSE:SCHW) which was down 5.25% to 29.22 in late trade, E-TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:ETFC) which lost 5.12% to settle at 26.69 and Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which was down 4.38% to 88.19 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were China Cmrcl (NASDAQ:CCCR) which rose 64.03% to 0.8600, Lion Biotechnologies (NASDAQ:LBIO) which was up 43.45% to settle at 8.6500 and Vestin Realty Mortgage II Inc (NASDAQ:VRTB) which gained 4.96% to close at 2.540.
The worst performers were Warren Resources Inc (NASDAQ:WRES) which was down 45.26% to 0.0520 in late trade, Delta Technology Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:DELT) which lost 40.00% to settle at 0.4800 and Forbes Energy Services Ltd (NASDAQ:FES) which was down 35.14% to 0.2400 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1770 to 1532 and 35 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1628 fell and 924 advanced, while 75 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.54% to 13.42.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 2.78% or 33.75 to $1246.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.67% or 0.33 to hit $48.84 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.46% or 0.23 to trade at $49.81 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.83% to 1.1357, while USD/JPY fell 2.06% to 106.63.
The US Dollar Index was down 1.66% at 93.97.
