Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Telecoms and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.15% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.24%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.21%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 0.80% or 1.27 points to trade at 160.08 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 0.59% or 0.63 points to end at 106.98 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 0.54% or 0.39 points to 72.79 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 0.83% or 0.52 points to trade at 62.32 in late trade. E I du Pont de Nemours & Co (NYSE:DD) declined 0.82% or 0.67 points to end at 81.12 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 0.55% or 0.33 points to 59.46.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Michael Kors Holdings Limited (NYSE:KORS) which rose 21.54% to 45.25, Ralph Lauren Corporation (NYSE:RL) which was up 13.28% to settle at 88.53 and Pioneer Natural Resources Company (NYSE:PXD) which gained 4.43% to close at 135.38.
The worst performers were Mallinckrodt (NYSE:MNK) which was down 6.69% to 38.19 in late trade, Albemarle Corporation (NYSE:ALB) which lost 6.23% to settle at 115.41 and Expeditors International Washington (NASDAQ:EXPD) which was down 5.32% to 55.92 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were FibroGen Inc (NASDAQ:FGEN) which rose 48.20% to 49.50, Cutera Inc (NASDAQ:CUTR) which was up 21.01% to settle at 32.25 and Adomani Inc (NASDAQ:ADOM) which gained 18.64% to close at 7.70.
The worst performers were Digiliti Money Inc (NASDAQ:DGLT) which was down 42.19% to 0.3700 in late trade, Depomed Inc (NASDAQ:DEPO) which lost 33.48% to settle at 6.14 and Biolase Inc (NASDAQ:BIOL) which was down 28.05% to 0.5900 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1976 to 1130 and 133 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1431 fell and 1035 advanced, while 161 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 10.67% to 10.99.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.11% or 1.43 to $1266.13 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.38% or 0.19 to hit $49.20 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.52% or 0.27 to trade at $52.10 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.38% to 1.1750, while USD/JPY fell 0.33% to 110.39.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.24% at 93.52.
