Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.12%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.83%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.54%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 1.74% or 4.67 points to trade at 272.51 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 1.69% or 8.51 points to end at 511.52 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.96% or 2.98 points to 314.91 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which lost 4.29% or 6.95 points to trade at 155.12 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 3.84% or 1.18 points to end at 29.53 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) shed 2.11% or 1.09 points to 50.51.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were TJX Companies Inc (NYSE:TJX) which rose 5.19% to 79.02, Campbell Soup Company (NYSE:CPB) which was up 3.89% to settle at 50.71 and W. R. Berkley Corp (NYSE:WRB) which gained 3.83% to close at 71.76.
The worst performers were Advance Auto Parts Inc (NYSE:AAP) which was down 15.06% to 156.24 in late trade, Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which lost 13.71% to settle at 9.63 and Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) which was down 13.14% to 155.47 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Fast Radius Inc (NASDAQ:FSRD) which rose 106.29% to 0.21, Qurate Retail Inc Series B (NASDAQ:QRTEB) which was up 45.90% to settle at 10.41 and InMed Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:INM) which gained 36.33% to close at 3.79.
The worst performers were Dlocal Ltd (NASDAQ:DLO) which was down 50.71% to 10.46 in late trade, Brainsway Ltd (NASDAQ:BWAY) which lost 31.56% to settle at 2.19 and Cuentas Inc (NASDAQ:CUEN) which was down 28.00% to 0.25 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2104 to 1012 and 119 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2616 fell and 1142 advanced, while 236 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.75% to 24.11.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.03% or 0.60 to $1,777.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.83% or 1.59 to hit $85.33 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 1.29% or 1.21 to trade at $92.65 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.43% to 1.04, while USD/JPY rose 0.15% to 139.49.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.13% at 106.16.
