Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Consumer Goods and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.11%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.41%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.85%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 1.25% or 0.70 points to trade at 56.89 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 1.12% or 1.26 points to end at 113.75 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 0.88% or 2.87 points to 330.24 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which lost 2.47% or 2.48 points to trade at 97.94 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 1.71% or 0.62 points to end at 35.69 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 1.57% or 2.54 points to 159.29.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Signature Bank (OTC:SBNY) which rose 5.70% to 0.15, Bio-Techne Corp (NASDAQ:TECH) which was up 4.40% to settle at 81.22 and Fortive Corp (NYSE:FTV) which gained 2.74% to close at 66.83.
The worst performers were DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which was down 9.42% to 8.08 in late trade, American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which lost 9.22% to settle at 13.00 and Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which was down 7.17% to 9.58 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were National CineMedia Inc (NASDAQ:NCMI) which rose 114.60% to 0.44, T Stamp Inc (NASDAQ:IDAI) which was up 100.00% to settle at 3.82 and Guardforce AI Co Ltd (NASDAQ:GFAI) which gained 88.72% to close at 31.12.
The worst performers were Virgin Orbit Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:VORB) which was down 34.83% to 0.08 in late trade, VBI Vaccines Inc (NASDAQ:VBIV) which lost 29.68% to settle at 3.27 and Cutera Inc (NASDAQ:CUTR) which was down 28.19% to 19.44 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1613 to 1371 and 120 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2278 fell and 1275 advanced, while 200 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.05% to 19.09.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.50% or 10.05 to $2,029.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 2.11% or 1.72 to hit $83.25 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 1.89% or 1.62 to trade at $87.23 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.72% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.34% to 133.20.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.65% at 101.22.
