Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Telecoms, Basic Materials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.05%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.17%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.23%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 2.15% or 4.31 points to trade at 205.08 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 1.01% or 3.46 points to end at 346.25 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 0.97% or 1.03 points to 107.01 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 3.16% or 2.60 points to trade at 79.60 in late trade. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 2.17% or 1.18 points to end at 53.19 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) shed 1.37% or 0.94 points to 67.62.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which rose 11.48% to 28.060, Ulta Beauty Inc (NASDAQ:ULTA) which was up 5.53% to settle at 274.37 and Patterson Companies Inc (NASDAQ:PDCO) which gained 4.08% to close at 23.47.
The worst performers were Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which was down 7.71% to 49.41 in late trade, Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which lost 4.74% to settle at 60.24 and PVH Corp (NYSE:PVH) which was down 4.70% to 136.43 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Mercantil Bank Holding Corp Class B (NASDAQ:MBNAB) which rose 1000.00% to 200.00, Mercantil Bank Holding Corp Class A (NASDAQ:MBNAA) which was up 518.00% to settle at 58.03 and MannKind Corp (NASDAQ:MNKD) which gained 89.09% to close at 2.080.
The worst performers were Aeglea Bio Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:AGLE) which was down 15.46% to 9.24 in late trade, Apricus Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:APRI) which lost 15.15% to settle at 0.280 and EyeGate Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:EYEG) which was down 14.29% to 0.480 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1965 to 1089 and 112 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1471 fell and 1115 advanced, while 120 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.26% to 13.15.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.78% or 9.40 to $1197.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.54% or 0.38 to hit $69.42 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.41% or 0.32 to trade at $77.83 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.30% to 1.1585, while USD/JPY rose 0.34% to 111.45.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.31% at 95.36.
