Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Technology and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.00%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.72%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.71%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 1.38% or 0.67 points to trade at 49.17 at the close. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 1.35% or 1.85 points to end at 138.45 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) was up 1.16% or 2.41 points to 211.41 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 2.45% or 1.27 points to trade at 50.48 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 1.64% or 3.46 points to end at 207.57 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 1.25% or 2.13 points to 168.12.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE:HRL) which rose 4.72% to 44.81, CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) which was up 4.50% to settle at 97.29 and Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) which gained 2.84% to close at 452.50.
The worst performers were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 6.10% to 1003.80 in late trade, Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which lost 5.43% to settle at 17.77 and Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings (NYSE:LH) which was down 5.01% to 281.96 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Inspira Technologies Oxy BHN Ltd (NASDAQ:IINN) which rose 84.01% to 4.95, American Virtual Cloud Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:AVCT) which was up 82.52% to settle at 1.880 and Ensysce Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:ENSC) which gained 66.78% to close at 4.97.
The worst performers were Reata Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:RETA) which was down 46.51% to 29.11 in late trade, Tecnoglass Inc (NASDAQ:TGLS) which lost 36.02% to settle at 21.56 and Code Chain New Continent Ltd (NASDAQ:CCNC) which was down 29.41% to 1.200 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2481 to 771 and 137 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2966 fell and 884 advanced, while 164 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 8.44% to 21.58.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.54% or 9.60 to $1775.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 2.45% or 1.77 to hit $70.59 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.01% or 0.01 to trade at $73.98 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 1.1292, while USD/JPY unchanged 0.00% to 113.44.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.36% at 96.225.
