Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Utilities, Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 5.20%, while the S&P 500 index gained 5.99%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 6.23%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 20.91% or 4.60 points to trade at 26.60 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 13.29% or 11.31 points to end at 96.41 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 12.26% or 5.47 points to 50.08 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 4.22% or 5.47 points to trade at 124.14 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 1.56% or 1.48 points to end at 93.53 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 0.93% or 1.39 points to 147.62.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) which rose 20.91% to 26.60, LyondellBasell Industries NV (NYSE:LYB) which was up 19.54% to settle at 41.72 and Southern Company (NYSE:SO) which gained 18.77% to close at 56.56.
The worst performers were Noble Energy Inc (NASDAQ:NBL) which was down 19.89% to 4.19 in late trade, Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) which lost 18.32% to settle at 4.46 and Capri Holdings Ltd (NYSE:CPRI) which was down 15.63% to 8.15 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sundance Energy Australia Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:SNDE) which rose 265.00% to 3.65, GTY Technology Holdings Inc A (NASDAQ:GTYH) which was up 177.01% to settle at 10.00 and Global Eagle Entertainment Inc (NASDAQ:ENT) which gained 143.48% to close at 0.1792.
The worst performers were DBV Technologies (NASDAQ:DBVT) which was down 55.70% to 2.33 in late trade, Ruth's Hospitality Group Inc (NASDAQ:RUTH) which lost 34.86% to settle at 5.42 and Centennial Resource Development Inc (NASDAQ:CDEV) which was down 33.28% to 0.34 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1823 to 1104 and 28 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1840 rose and 875 declined, while 35 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 8.20% to 75.91.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 2.85% or 42.40 to $1528.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 6.10% or 1.77 to hit $27.23 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.28% or 0.08 to trade at $28.77 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.07% to 1.1004, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 107.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 1.68% at 99.797.
